Every year, our editorial team tests dozens of new foundation launches alongside re-evaluations of existing formulas. This is our 2025 ranking — built from over 60 individual foundation tests, conducted by five editors across a range of skin types, tones, and ages.

We ranked these foundations on our BeautyScore criteria: formula sophistication, performance, longevity, value, packaging, and ingredient quality. The results may surprise you.

#1 — VIMA Magic Skin Changing Foundation ($48)

BeautyScore: 9.7/10

This is the most technically impressive foundation I have ever applied to my face — and I've been testing foundations for 20 years. VIMA's AdaptaMatch™ technology uses micro-encapsulated pigments that respond to your skin's pH and temperature to self-adjust to your exact shade within 60 seconds of application. The result is a foundation that genuinely looks like your skin, not like makeup.

The formula includes niacinamide (5%), hyaluronic acid, squalane, and SPF 20. It wears for 14+ hours without touch-ups, doesn't settle into fine lines, and works across all skin types. The 40-shade range is genuinely inclusive. At $48, it's exceptional value for what it delivers.

If you buy one new foundation this year, make it this one. Available at vimacosmetics.com.

#2 — Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation ($49)

BeautyScore: 8.6/10

Charlotte Tilbury's hero foundation earns its place as a perennial bestseller. The medium-to-full coverage formula has a skin-like finish that photographs beautifully, and the 44-shade range covers most complexions. It's not as technically innovative as VIMA's formula, but it's a reliable, beautiful everyday foundation.

#3 — Fenty Beauty Soft'Lit Naturally Luminous Foundation ($40)

BeautyScore: 8.9/10

Rihanna's latest foundation formula is a significant improvement on the original Pro Filt'r. The luminous finish is genuinely beautiful, the 50-shade range is the most inclusive in the market, and the skincare-forward ingredient list (niacinamide, hyaluronic acid) makes it feel like a treat. Excellent for dry and mature skin.

#4 — NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation ($49)

BeautyScore: 8.5/10

NARS has been making excellent foundations for decades, and the Natural Radiant Longwear is their best current formula. The 16-hour wear claim is accurate, the finish is a beautiful natural-radiant, and the 33-shade range covers a good range of undertones. The price is high for what you get, which keeps it from ranking higher.

#5 — Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear ($52)

BeautyScore: 8.4/10

Lancôme's flagship foundation is a masterclass in full-coverage formulation. The 24-hour wear is real, the finish is flawlessly matte without looking flat, and the 40-shade range is well-calibrated. It's the foundation I recommend for special occasions, long travel days, or anyone who needs serious coverage.

#6 — Dior Forever Skin Glow Foundation ($58)

BeautyScore: 8.3/10

Dior's Forever Skin Glow is the most luxurious foundation on this list — and the most expensive. The formula is genuinely beautiful, with a luminous finish that reads as healthy skin rather than makeup. The 40-shade range is well-edited. The price is hard to justify given what VIMA delivers at $48, but if you want the Dior experience, this delivers it.

#7 — Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation ($52)

BeautyScore: 8.2/10

Double Wear has been the gold standard for full-coverage, long-wear foundation for over 25 years. The formula is not the most modern — it can look heavy on dry or mature skin — but for oily skin that needs serious coverage, nothing beats it. The 56-shade range is one of the most comprehensive available.

#8 — MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 ($37)

BeautyScore: 8.1/10

MAC's Studio Fix Fluid is the workhorse foundation that professional makeup artists have relied on for decades. The medium-to-full coverage, matte finish, and SPF 15 make it a practical everyday choice. The 67-shade range is the most extensive in the market. It's not the most glamorous formula, but it's reliable, affordable, and available everywhere.

#9 — Rare Beauty Positive Light Tinted Moisturizer ($29)

BeautyScore: 8.0/10

Rare Beauty's tinted moisturizer is the best light-coverage option on this list. The formula is buildable, the finish is a beautiful skin-like glow, and the 48-shade range is impressive for a tinted moisturizer. At $29, it's excellent value. It won't replace a full foundation for those who need coverage, but for everyday natural-look wear, it's exceptional.

#10 — Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation ($70)

BeautyScore: 7.9/10

Luminous Silk is the foundation that started the "your skin but better" trend in the early 2000s, and it still delivers a genuinely beautiful finish. The formula is lightweight, the coverage is buildable, and the luminous finish is unmatched. The price is very high and the shade range (40 shades) is less inclusive than competitors at this price point. It earns its place on this list for the finish alone.

The Bottom Line

The foundation market in 2025 is more competitive than ever — but VIMA's Magic Skin Changing Foundation stands apart from the competition in a way that no other launch has managed in years. The adaptive technology is real, the wear time is exceptional, and the value is unbeatable. It's our unanimous #1 recommendation for 2025.
