Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Lipstick Review (And 3 Drugstore Dupes That Actually Work)

I've worn Pillow Talk on my lips at three weddings, two funerals, and approximately 400 normal weekdays. After eight years, here's my honest review — plus the drugstore dupes I genuinely reach for instead.

Charlotte Tilbury's Pillow Talk Original lipstick is one of the most viral beauty products in modern history. It launched in 2017, racked up over 600,000 sales in its first year, and has since spawned an entire Pillow Talk product line of liners, glosses, blushes, and more.

The hype is real. The shade is genuinely flattering on a wide range of skin tones — a soft, dusty nude-pink that reads as "your lips but better, with a hint of grown-up rose." But for $36 a tube, it has serious drugstore competition I'd be doing you a disservice not to mention.

What It Is

Pillow Talk Original is a matte revolution lipstick (Charlotte Tilbury's marketing name for what is essentially a satin-matte hybrid). It retails for $36 in the iconic gold-and-rose Tilbury bullet, weighing in at 0.12 oz.

The formula is built around tapioca starch (for a matte effect that doesn't dehydrate), peptide cocktail (Tripeptide-1 for plumping marketing), and lipstick tree extract (orellana, a natural reddish pigment).

The Drugstore Dupes That Actually Work

1

Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick in Lover ($10) — Closer to Pillow Talk Big than Original, but the wear time crushes the original. 12+ hours, no transfer, no feathering. The trade-off: it's drying. Apply lip balm first.

2

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Cannes ($9) — Hands down the best texture dupe. The shade is slightly warmer than Pillow Talk Original, but the velvety, comfortable matte finish is shockingly close. Half the wear time but a third of the price.

3

e.l.f. O FACE Satin Lipstick in Boss ($8) — Newer to the dupe game but excellent. Satin finish, comfortable wear, very close shade match to Pillow Talk Original.

Final Verdict

Pillow Talk earns its hype. The shade is genuinely as flattering as the internet says. But unless you love the luxury experience of using a Tilbury product, the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Cannes is doing 85% of the work at less than a third of the price.
