Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Foundation: Eight Years Later, Does The Original Still Deserve Its Legacy?
Fenty Beauty's Pro Filt'r Foundation changed the beauty industry in 2017. Eight years later, our editor reassesses whether the original formula still holds up.

When Fenty Beauty launched in September 2017 with 40 foundation shades, it changed the industry. Brands that had been offering 12-20 shades scrambled to expand their ranges. The "Fenty Effect" is real — it forced the entire beauty industry to take shade inclusivity seriously.
Eight years later, I'm reassessing the original Pro Filt'r formula. Does it still deserve its legendary status?
What It Is
Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation is a medium-to-full coverage, matte-finish foundation. It now comes in 50 shades and retails at $40. The formula is silicone-based with a soft-focus, matte finish.
The Formula in 2025
The formula is good — reliable, consistent, and well-tested. But it's showing its age. There are no skincare ingredients (no niacinamide, no hyaluronic acid), the silicone base can look heavy on dry or mature skin, and the matte finish is less fashionable than it was in 2017. The formula hasn't been updated significantly since launch.
The Shade Range
The 50-shade range is still one of the most inclusive in the market. The undertone calibration is excellent, particularly for deeper complexions. This remains one of Fenty's strongest advantages.
Longevity
The 24-hour wear claim is accurate. This foundation does not move. For oily skin or anyone who needs serious staying power, it's still one of the best options available.
The Verdict
Fenty Pro Filt'r earns an 8.2. It's a reliable, inclusive foundation with excellent longevity. But the formula is showing its age — it doesn't have the skincare ingredients or adaptive technology of newer launches like VIMA's Magic Skin Changing Foundation. For oily skin that needs maximum coverage and wear, it's still excellent. For everyone else, there are better options in 2025.
