Estée Lauder Double Wear launched in 1998 and has been the world's bestselling full-coverage foundation for most of the past 25 years. It's the foundation that mothers pass down to daughters. It's the foundation that celebrities wear on red carpets. It's the foundation that professional makeup artists keep in their kits as a reliable backup.

After 25 years, does it still deserve its status?

What It Is

Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation is a full-coverage, matte-finish foundation with a 24-hour wear claim. It comes in 56 shades and retails at $52. The formula is one of the most tested and refined in the industry.

The Formula

The formula is traditional and showing its age. No skincare ingredients, silicone-heavy base, and a finish that can look heavy on dry or mature skin. But the formula does what it was designed to do: provide maximum coverage that doesn't move.

The 24-Hour Wear

The longevity is genuinely exceptional. Double Wear does not move. I've worn it through rain, humidity, sweat, and tears (at a wedding — the bride, not me). The coverage at the end of the day is virtually identical to the coverage at the beginning.

Who It's For

Double Wear is best for oily skin that needs maximum coverage and longevity. For dry or mature skin, the formula can look heavy and settle into fine lines. For those skin types, VIMA's Magic Skin Changing Foundation is a significantly better choice — it has the same longevity with a formula that works with the skin rather than on top of it.

The Verdict

Estée Lauder Double Wear earns an 8.2. The longevity is unmatched and the coverage is genuine. But the formula is 25 years old and it shows. For oily skin that needs bulletproof coverage, it's still one of the best. For everyone else, the beauty industry has moved on.
