MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 Review: The Professional's Foundation, Honestly Tested
MAC Studio Fix Fluid has been the makeup artist's backstage staple for over 20 years. As a former working MUA, I have strong opinions. After re-testing the 2025 reformulation, here's where it stands.

MAC Studio Fix Fluid is the foundation I learned to do makeup with. As a working MUA in New York from 2008 to 2020, I used it on hundreds of clients — brides, editorial shoots, TV appearances, runway shows. I know this formula intimately.
What It Is
A full-coverage, matte-finish liquid foundation with SPF 15. Available in 65 shades across the full spectrum of skin tones and undertones. Retails for $40 at MAC counters and Sephora. The formula was updated in 2023 with improved skincare ingredients.
How It Performs
Studio Fix Fluid is a workhorse. It covers everything — redness, hyperpigmentation, acne, dark circles — with one to two layers. The matte finish is true matte, not satin, which makes it the best choice for oily skin and for photography where shine is the enemy.
Wear time is genuinely impressive: 10-12 hours on most skin types without touch-ups. On oily skin, it's the longest-wearing foundation I've tested at this price point.
Who It's For
Oily to combination skin. Anyone who wants full coverage. Makeup artists and professionals who need reliability. Brides. Anyone who photographs frequently.
Who Should Skip It
Dry skin (the matte finish can look powdery and emphasize texture). Mature skin (same issue). Anyone who wants a natural or dewy finish.
Final Verdict
MAC Studio Fix Fluid is a classic for a reason. It's not the most sophisticated formula on the market, but for full coverage and long wear on oily skin, it remains one of the best options at any price point. The 65-shade range is unmatched in the industry.
