MAC Strobe Cream Review: The Original Glow Product, 25 Years Later

MAC Strobe Cream launched in 1997 and invented the 'glow' category before glow was a thing. After 25 years, is it still the best illuminating moisturizer on the market?

MAC Strobe Cream launched in 1997. It was the first mass-market illuminating moisturizer — a product that delivered a luminous, glowing finish before the beauty industry had a word for it. Twenty-five years later, it's still in production and still selling. The question is whether it still deserves its place in a market now flooded with glow products.

What It Is

A lightweight, illuminating moisturizer with a pearlescent finish. Available in four shades (Pinklite, Goldlite, Silverlite, and Peachlite). Retails for $38. The formula contains glycerin, vitamin E, and mica for the illuminating effect.

How It Performs

As a standalone moisturizer: adequate hydration for normal skin, not enough for dry skin. As a glow product: genuinely beautiful — a subtle, skin-like luminosity that looks natural rather than glittery. As a primer: excellent — it creates a luminous base that makes foundation look more skin-like.

Final Verdict

MAC Strobe Cream is a classic that still earns its place in the market. It's not the most hydrating moisturizer, but as a glow product and primer, it's still one of the best. At $38, it's fair value.
